The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is one of the peculiar regions of the Republic of Azerbaijan in terms of demographic trends. The number of population reached 402.4 thousand in 2009 comparing to 300.5 thousand in 1990 in spite of socio-economic difficulties of 1990s. 99.5% of population are Azerbaijanis and the rest are Russians, Kurds, Turks and the representatives of other nations. 118 thousand - 29,3% of population live in cities, 284.4 thousand - 70,7% of population are rural inhabitants. The districts (rayons) of Nakhchivan AR are comprised of 172 administrative-regional provinces. In average, there are 75 persons per 1 km2 (2009).
