The first newspaper of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is “Sharg Gapissi” (“The Door of East”) (1921), the official newspaper of the Supreme Assembly and Cabinet of Ministers. There are also “Hearth of Noah” (city Nakhchivan), “Voice of Sharur” (Sharur), “Life of People” (Ordubad), “Morning of East” (Babak), “Voice of Araz” (Julfa), “Voice of Oghuz” (Shahbuz), “Hearth of Oghuz” (Sadarak), “New Life” (Kangarli) which are official newspapers of regional executive committees. The press of the autonomous republic shedding light on social, political, economic and cultural life plays a significant role for the general progress of the country.
Furthermore, “Nakhchivan” and “Nagshijahan” journals, and “News” magazines of Nakhchivan State University and Nakhchivan branch of Azerbaijan National Academy of Science are published. In principal, the articles regarding the results of research as to history, socio-political life, economy, science, culture, literature, art and prominent personalities of Nakhchivan and also the technical sciences are published.
In Nakhchivan, general and local radio broadcasting has been commenced since 1926 and 1930 respectively. The television center has been broadcasting since 1963. Same year Nakhchivan AR Television and Radio Broadcast Committee was established according to the basis of local radio upon the decision of the Council of Ministers of the autonomous republic. The Committee has played important role in terms of social, political, economic and cultural affairs. Particularly in 1988-1990, the Committee breaching the information blockade conveyed the just voice of Azerbaijan to the world community. Currently the Committee worthily contribute to the far-reaching progress of the Republic of Azerbaijan, including the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, through sovereignty and democratic path. In 2004, the broadcasting of Nakhchivan television and radio via independent channel was ensured. At present, many local programs are telecast during 14 hours per day. The material and technical basis of the Committee is constantly renewed and modernized.
In addition to state TV and radio agencies, one private television channel (Channel 35) and one private radio (The voice of Nakhchivan) are broadcasted. Furthermore, many specialists are trained at the faculty of journalism at Nakhchivan State University (NSU). The cable television attached to NSU since 2005 was given under responsibility of the students of this faculty so as to practically improve their professional skills.
