The site of President of Azerbaijan Republic

The reciprocal relations of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, an integral part of the Republic of Azerbaijan, with various international organizations date back to the early years of the state independence of Azerbaijan. Thanks to the intensive political endeavor of National Leader Heydar Aliyev, the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic in 1990-1993, the autonomous republic became in the limelight of several international organizations and auspicious ground for reciprocal cooperation was arisen. 
In during last time, reciprocal fruitful relations between the international organizations and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic were further developed.  

  • On April 01, 1992, three CSCE representatives led by the foreign minister of Czechoslovakia paid a visit to Nakhchivan. In the course of the visit, the representatives were received by the Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR.

  • On February 02, 1993, Mahmud Al-Said, the representative of UN in Azerbaijan, paid a visit to Nakhchivan. In the course of the visit, the representative met with the Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR.

  • On February 11, 1993, Patrick Smith, the representative of UN High Commissar on the work with refugees in the Republic of Azerbaijan and the officials of International Red Cross Society visited the autonomous republic in order to get acquainted with the situation of refugees in Nakhchivan. In the course of the visit, the representatives met with the Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR.

  • On March 08, 1993, Luis Rivera, official of the representation of UN High Commissar on the work with refugees in the Republic of Azerbaijan, paid a visit to Nakhchivan. In the course of the visit, the representative met with the Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR.

  • On May 26, 1993, Jerald Weythauz, chief advisor of the director of Africa International Assistance and Development Agency on the issues regarding health and M.Kulikov, head of Europe-Asia section of the Agency, paid a visit to Nakhchivan. The representatives met with the Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR in the course of the visit.

  • On March 06, 1997, expert group of UN Development Programme visited Nakhchivan. In the course of the visit, the delegation met with the Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR.

  • On September 26, 1998, international conference called as "Nakhchivan - Open Door" was held in Nakhchivan. 120-person delegation led by Murat Erjan, UN resident coordinator, participated in the conference. The officials of diplomatic missions of the Republic of Azerbaijan were represented in the delegation. The aim of conference was to make close the representatives of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and foreign countries and attract investment to the region's economy. The potential investment opportunities in the autonomous republic were mentioned for the representatives of business enterprises.

  • The office of International Migration Organization in Nakhchivan started functioning in 1998. The office ensures some credits for farmers on the basis of regional development plan of UN Development Programme in order to overcome the social and economic problems of Nakhchivan and engages with restoration of kahrizes in the autonomous republic.

  • Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic has been represented in the Council of Europe through the Local and Regional Authorities Congress of Europe and engaged in European policy. The Republic of Azerbaijan is represented by the representatives of the autonomous republic in the Regions chamber of the two-chamber congress.

  • On July 20, 2002, Martines Kasan, speaker of Parliament of Council of Europe on Azerbaijan, paid a visit to Nakhchivan. The representative was received by the Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR.

  • On May 20, 2005, Mauricio Paves, the head of OSCE Baku office, and David Svoley, economic and ecological issues adviser of the office, visited Nakhchivan. In the course of the visit, the representatives met with the Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR.

  • On September 21, 2005, the delegation led by Henric Arense, the head of election observation mission of OSCE, paid a visit to Nakhchivan. In the course of the visit, the delegation met with the Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR.

  • On November 04, 2005, 5-person election observation group led by Yevgeni Yankovich, chief-department of the CIS Executive Committee, paid a visit to Nakhchivan in order to observe the elections to the National Assembly of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the autonomous republic.

  • On March 02, 2006, Asma Jahangir, special speaker on religion and faith freedom of the UN Human Rights Commission, paid a visit to Nakhchivan. In the course of the visit, the representative met with the Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR.

  • On June 30, 2006, Sarat Dash, the head of Azerbaijan Mission of the International Migration Organization, paid a visit to Nakhchivan. In the course of the visit, the representative was received by the Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR.

  • On November 20, 2006, the presentation ceremony of the accomplishment of the projects regarding the Establishment of Unions and Micro Credit by the Azerbaijan Mission of International Migration Organization (IOM) was held. The Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR and Sarat Dash, the head of Azerbaijan Mission of IOM, participated in the ceremony.

  • On November 22-23, 2006, seminar on "The Restoration of Kahriz Water Systems in Azerbaijan: Experiences, Achievements and Perspectives" was held in Nakhchivan upon the initiative of Azerbaijan Mission of the International Migration Organization. T.Myer, deputy regional director of the Swiss Development and Cooperation Agency, Sarat Dash, the head of Azerbaijan Mission of IOM, and representatives of government and non-government organizations were participated in the seminar.

  • On May 22-23, 2007, Denis Bribosia, special representative of Secretary-General of the Council of Europe in the Republic of Azerbaijan, paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In the course of the visit, the special representative met with the Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR.

  • On June 15-17, 2007, Bruno Pueza, resident representative of the United Nations in Azerbaijan, and Sarat Dash, the head of Azerbaijan Mission of IOM, visited Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In the course of the visit, the representatives were received by the Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR.

  • In November 2007, Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic was elected as an equitable member of the Permanent working group of the regions with legislative power of the Council of Europe.

  • On November 01-02, 2007, Andreas Bush, chief of rule of law department of the OSCE Baku Office, and a senior official on law matters of the Office visited Nakhchivan. In the course of the visit, the representatives met with the first deputy of the Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR and Ombudsman of Nakhchivan AR.

  • On November 05-08, 2007, Jake Jones, chief executive of the Baku Office of International Republicans Institute of USA and office representatives accompanying him visited Nakhchivan. During the visit, delegation was received by the first deputy of the Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR.

  • On March 30, 2008, three officials of the International Republicans Institute of USA visited Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

  • On April 06, 2008, Marco Rotzia, official of the OSCE Baku Office, and 2 officials of the office accompanying him visited Nakhchivan.

  • On May 12-16, 2008, Derek Muller, Regional director of South Caucasus of the Swiss Development and Cooperation Agency, Sarat Dash, the head of Azerbaijan Mission of IOM, first secretary of the Embassy of the Confederation of Switzerland in Azerbaijan, Phillip Keller, head of South Caucasus Office of the Swiss Development and Cooperation Agency, and director of national program of the office visited Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. On 14 May 2008, in the course of the visit, representatives were received by the Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR.

  • On May 20-21, 2008, international conference on "Religious and Health Tourism: Organization of Spiritual and Physical Rest" was held by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan in accordance with the decision taken in 5th session of the ministers of Culture and Tourism of the member countries of the Organization of Islamic Conference held on 11-12 September 2006 in Baku. The representatives from Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Morocco and Gabon, as well as the ambassadors of Pakistan and Kazakhstan in Azerbaijan, and the representatives of national tourism companies participated in the conference. In the course of the visit, the conference participants were received by the Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

  • On June 21, 2008, "NATO Improved Networking scientific-practical seminar on the problems of information-communication technologies typical for remote regions" was held in Nakhchivan by the Nakhchivan State University, NATO and Central and East Europe Networking Association (Poland). In addition to the local representatives, Y.Kajevski, Caucasus region adviser on IT sector of NATO, Sezer Komshuoghlu and Abamuslum Guven, rectors of Kocaeli and Kars Caucasus universities of Turkey, S.Atkins, professor of Canada Simon Frezer University, J.Sadovski, professor of New York State University of the USA, Y.Veliychuk, representative of AkNET company in Kyrgyzstan, and other foreign representatives participated in the event. Some of participants of the international seminar were received by the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

  • On June 23-25, 2008, Jake Jones, chief-executive of Baku Office of the International Republicans Institute of the USA, and office representatives accompanying him visited Nakhchivan.

  • On June 27, 2008, 8th congress of Turkic World Pediatricians was held in Nakhchivan. The representatives from 10 countries - Azerbaijan, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Turkmenistan, Iraqi Turkmen, Tajikistan and Afghanistan, as well as the Chairman of Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Consul-general of the Republic of Turkey in Nakhchivan Mehmet Bilir and other officials participated in the congress.

  • On August 04-05, 2008, Jose Luis Herrero, the head of the OSCE Office in Baku, paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In the course of the visit, the ambassador met with the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR.

  • On September 15-16, 2008, the delegation led by Alexis Chahtahtinsky, the deputy head of the OSCE Office in Baku, paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In the course of the visit, the delegation was received by the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR.

  • On September 20, 2008, the delegation led by the chief executive of the American Bar Association (ABA CEELİ) paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

  • On September 15-16, 2008, the delegation led by Alexis Chahtahtinsky, the deputy head of the OSCE Office in Baku, paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In the course of the visit, the delegation was received by the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR.

  • On September 20, 2008, the delegation led by the chief executive of the American Bar Association (ABA CEELI) paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

  • On October 14-15, 2008, the delegation consisting of Peter Semneby, South Caucasus Representative of the EU, and his poltical advisers Mark Fawsett and Claire Delessard paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In the course of the visit, the delegation was received by the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR.

  • On 08 October and 30-31 October 2008, the delegations of the American Bar Association (ABA CEELI) paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

  • On November 11-14, 2008, Vasili Yujanin, the Head of Azerbaijan Mission of International Organization for Migration, paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In the course of the visit, the head of mission was received by the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR.

  • On November 20-22, 2008, Barbara Yale, Head of Economic and Environmental Affairs Unit of the OSCE Office in Baku, paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

  • On December 17-19, 2008, the delegation consisting of John MacGregor, Head of Political-military Unit of the OSCE Office in Baku, A.Karadeniz, Community Police Expert, E.Taghiyev, Programme Assistant of the Office and three representatives of the Czech Police School (C.Sasek, M.Bandas, A.Kroustak) paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic..

  • On March 31 - April 04, 2009, the delegation consisting of 13 members headed by Alexis Chahtahtinsky, acting Head of OSCE Office in Baku, paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. On the 3rd of March, the head of delegation was received by the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan AR. In the course of the visit, the delegation met with the Head of the Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, the Rector of the Nakhchivan State University and the Chairman of the Bar Association of the Nakhchivan AR in order to discuss the projects of the OSCE Office in Baku on Nakhchivan.

  • On April 10, 2009, delegation headed by Andreas Herkel, co-rapporteur of the Monitoring Committee of the Parliament Assembly of the Council of Europe on Azerbaijan, paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In the course of the visit, the delegation was received by the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Furthermore, the delegation met with the Commissioner on Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Nakhchivan AR and the representatives of the NGOs, and got acquainted with the historical monuments of the Nakhchivan city.

  • On April 24-25, 2009, international symposium on "Prophet Noah, the World storm and Nakhchivan" was held in Nakhchivan. Mr. Vasif Talibov, the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, attended the opening ceremony of the symposium. In general, famous scientists of Azerbaijan as well as many well-known orientalist scholars and philologists invited from foreign countries participated in the international symposium.

  • On 12-14 May 2009, international symposium on "Intellectual Property and Traditional Knowledge" was held in Nakhchivan. Delegates from 15 foreign countries representing the agencies on intellectual property and patent participated in the symposium. Chairman on Standardization, Metrology and Patent State Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan, chairman on Standardization, Metrology and Patent State Committee of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, representative of World Intellectual Property Organization and president of Eurasia Patent Organization participated in the opening ceremony of the international symposium.

  • On 14-15 May 2009, Vasili Yujanin, the Head of Azerbaijan Mission of International Organization for Migration, paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In the course of the visit, the head of mission held several meetings.

  • On 19-21 May 2009, Ambassador Ali Bilge Cankorel, Head of the OSCE Office in Baku, paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In the course of the visit, the ambassador was received by the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan AR. The purpose of visit was to get acquainted with the autonomous republic, to hold meetings here and to participate in the opening ceremony of the seminar on "Best practices for creating a positive business and investment climate" held by the OSCE Office in Baku on 20-22 May 2009. On the occasion of seminar, A.Chahtahtinsky, Deputy Head of the OSCE Office in Baku, and other representatives visited Nakhchivan as well.

  • On 25-26 June 2009, the delegation led by Bruno Pouezat, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In the course of the visit, the delegation was received by the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

  • On August 4, 2009, the heads of the missions of international organizations in the Republic of Azerbaijan visited Nakhchivan on the occasion of 85th anniversary of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In the course of the visit, the representatives attended to the ceremonial event in Heydar Aliyev Palace dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Mr. President Ilham Aliyev participated in the event as well. Furthermore, the guests got acquainted with the health-care centers and sport complexes as well as ancient historical monuments of the Nakhchivan city.

  • On 13-18 September 2009, delegates of International Committee of the Red Cross paid a call to Nakhchivan in order to carry out visits to persons detained in facilities both under Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Justice.

  • On 24-26 September 2009, the international conference on "Kahriz Systems as Architectural Monument, Sustainable Source of Water and Factor of Social and Economical Development" was held in Nakhchivan with joint cooperation of International Organization for Migration (IOM), Nakhchivan State University and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). Scientists from Japan, Pakistan, Iran and Oman, representatives of UN, OSCE, IOM as well as USAID and SDC, officials of the Embassies of the USA, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Germany and Norway in Azerbaijan, the consul-generals of Turkey and Iran in Nakhchivan, researchers of Azerbaijan National Academy of Science, academicians of the Nakhchivan State University, officials of Azerbaijani government and local government of the autonomous republic, representatives of various NGOs and the students attended to the conference.

  • On 25-26 September 2009, Scott Taylor, director of USAID Azerbaijan, and the representatives of the Baku Office of the Agency paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In the course of the visit, on September 26, 2009, the delegation was received by Mirhashim Seyidov, the Vice-Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

  • On 18-24 October 2009, International Committee of the Red Cross employees paid a visit to Nakhchivan for the purpose of performing visits to the families of disappeared persons and collecting comprehensive data about the disappeared members of these families.

  • On 18-21 November 2009, Aryen de Volff, Director of Azerbaijan Office of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI), paid a visit to Nakhchivan for general acquaintance.

  • On 07-08 January 2010, Scott Taylor, Azerbaijan Coordinator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), paid a call to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

  • On 17-21 January 2010, Vasiliy Yuzhanin, Chief of International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission in Azerbaijan, paid a visit to Nakhchivan (Martin Lenk, newly appointed Head of IOM Office in Nakhchivan, came also with him). In the course of the visit, On 19 January 2010, Chief of IOM Azerbaijan Mission as well as former and new heads of Nakhchivan Office were received by the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

  • On 28-31 January 2010, a delegation headed by Ali Bilge Cankorel, Head of the OSCE Office in Baku, paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In the course of the visit, the delegation was received by the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan AR. Furthermore, they paid calls to some authorities of Nakhchivan AR, including the Chairman of the Supreme Court, justice minister and deputy interior minister, Ombudsman, Chairman of Bar Association and Chairman of Central Election Commission.

  • On February 10, 2010, Head of Rule of Law Unit and police expert of Political-Military Unit of the OSCE Office in Baku paid a visit to Nakhchivan. In the course of the visit, the delegates were received by Nakhchivani authorities, including the Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Assembly, Chairman of the Supreme Court, justice interior ministers, Head of Nakhchivan AR Department of the Foreign Ministry, Chairman of Bar Association and Commander of Internal Troops.

  • On February 16, 2010, Sheila Young, Economic Growth Office Director of USAID Azerbaijan, and accompanying delegation visited the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

  • On 02-03 March 2010, the delegation led by Thomas Hammarberg, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In the course of the visit, the delegation was received by the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

  • On 12-14 April 2010, Joseph Taggart, Head of Democracy and Governance Office of USAID Azerbaijan, and Sheldon Markoff, Head of IREX Azerbaijan, paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

  • On 18-20 June 2010, Roland Kobia, Head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan, and Filip Jottard, the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to the Republic of Azerbaijan, paid a visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In the course of the visit, the ambassadors were received by the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

  • On June 13, 2010, the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic received Daniel Owen, newly appointed Head of Task Group for Azerbaijan Rural Investment Project of the World Bank, as well as the participants of the "Session of Interregional Mutual Meetings" held under the framework of Azerbaijan Rural Investment Project.
