The site of President of Azerbaijan Republic

On March 3, 2010, the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic received the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights

On 3 March 2010, Mr. Vasif Talibov, the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, received Mr. Thomas Hammarberg, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, and the accompanying delegation.

Greeting guests, the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly appreciated award of Nobel Peace Prize for Amnesty International which was formerly headed by Thomas Hammarberg, and expressed pleasure for his current activities to tackle global problems in the Council of Europe, especially in terms of human rights and protection of children.

The Chairman of the Supreme Assembly talked about mutual relations between the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and the Council of Europe. It was mentioned that the cooperation between the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and the Council of Europe was launched in 1997. A special reference was then given to the draft of new Constitution of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic by the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe. Starting from 2001, new era of mutual relations was commenced. The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, an integral part of Azerbaijan, is represented in the Council of Europe Local and Regional Authorities Congress since Azerbaijan became a full-member of the Council of Europe.

The Chairman of the Supreme Assembly stated that the visits of Denis Bribosia, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe in Azerbaijan, Andreas Herkel, Co-rapporteur of the Monitoring Committee of the Parliament Assembly of the Council of Europe on Azerbaijan, and other delegations to Nakhchivan have important role on development of relations between the Council of Europe and the autonomous republic. He expressed his assurance on the current visit to be beneficial for improvement of mutual relations.

Thomas Hammarberg, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, expressed his pleasure for honoring of European values in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and his gratitude for cordial meeting. Moreover, he gave information about the meetings to be held in the course of the visit.

In the meeting views were exchanged on human rights.
