On April 6, 2018, minister of foreign affairs of Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif paid an official visit to Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
Minister of foreign affairs was welcomed at Nakhchivan International Airport by Azer Zeynalov, first deputy chairman of the Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan Autonomous Respublic, Vusal Alakbarli, deputy head of the Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Bunyad Huseynov, extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Islamic Republic of Iran and Aliannagi Huseynov, consul general of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Tabriz.
On April 6, 2018, Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic Vasif Talibov met with minister of foreign affairs of Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif.
The Chairman of the Supreme Assembly expressed his gratitude to M.J.Zarif for the hospitality shown during his visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran last year, as well as the work done for the improvement of relations over the short period of time. Speaking about the successfull development of relations between Azerbaijan and Iran due to efforts of presidents of both countries and 11 meetings held between them, The Chairman of Supreme Assembly noted that reciprocal visits contributes further enhancement of bilateral relations. The Chairman of Supreme Assembly emphasized the existence of successful cooperation between the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and the close provinces of Iran in the fields of transport, education, economy, trade, energy, customs, railways and etc. Noting the friendly relations between our nations, The Chairman expressed his confidence for the further development of relations.
Mohammad Javad Zarif expressed his pleasure for being in Nakhchivan and his gratitude for the warm welcoming. The minister noted that the development of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is obvious and it opens great opportunities for the development of bilateral relations. Expressing that the Islamic Republic of Iran attaches great importance to the development of relations with Azerbaijan and its Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, M.J.Zarif noted that the meetings held and the decisions taken between the heads of state in recent years have confirmed this fact once again. Reminding the selection of Nakhchivan as the Capital of Islamic Culture in 2018 and Tabriz as the Tourism Capital of the Islamic World, the minister stressed that there is a great opportunity for further expansion of existing relations and cooperation in various fields between East and West Azerbaijan provinces of Iran and Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
During the meeting the sides exchanged views on the issues of mutual interest.
After the official meeting, M.C. Zarif visited Duzdag Physiotherapy Center and got acquainted with the conditions created for patients treated there.
After examining the center, the Iranian Foreign Minister visited the Consulate General of Iran in Nakhchivan and got acquainted with the working conditions of the staff.
Later the minister visited the Nakhchivan State University and delivered a lecture on "Neighborhood Policy in New International Conditions".
The official visit of minister of foreign affairs of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif to Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic ended on April 6, 2018.
At the Nakhchivan International Airport, minister of foreign affairs of Islamic Republic of Iran was seen off by the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic Vasif Talibov and other senior officials.
